Overview

WHY AM I RUNNING?

As a proud Kansas Citian born and raised in the Northland, I am running because I believe in the future of Kansas City and understand the importance the Northland plays in our city. Having lived in both the Northland and Downtown, I bring a unique perspective on the needs of our community and why the continued strength of the Northland matters to Kansas City as a whole. I understand the priorities of Northland residents and look forward to being a present and vocal advocate for our community at City Hall. I am deeply committed to Kansas City's future and believe my experience with the municipal process, along with my passion for representing our community's voice, makes me a strong choice to serve the Second District.

Hello! I am Justin Short.

I am a native Northlander who returned home to give back to the community that has given so much to me. I graduated from Park Hill South High School, became an Eagle Scout through Platte Woods United Methodist Church, where I remain a member, and attended the University of Missouri. My father served as an elected official in the Northland in multiple capacities for several years, and my mother raised funds for Northland Charities for more than two decades. I come from a family rooted in public service, and I look forward to representing you at City Hall.

At my core, I am passionate about supporting my community and setting it up for success for future generations of Kansas Citians. My commitment to Kansas City and my understanding of the municipal process are why I am running. I am running to represent you and to be your voice at City Hall. The Northland deserves a vocal, knowledgeable, and present advocate.

Where is the Second District?

There are six districts in Kansas City, three of which include areas in the Northland. Each District has two City Council representatives.

The at-large City Council member is elected citywide, while the in-district City Council member is elected only by residents who live in that district.

I don't live in the Second District. Can I still support you?

Of course! As a member of the City's legislative body, all areas of Kansas City are important to its overall success. While my primary focus will be the Second District, I can still help get you the answers you need and be your voice at City Hall.

Justin, I have no idea what district I am in. How do I find out?

Easy! Head over to this link and type your address into the search bar. It will show your district, who represents you, and their contact information. If you need further assistance, you can always reach out to me by email.

Are you curious about how City Council works?

City Council hears ordinances and resolutions in committee meetings held each Tuesday. Ordinances and resolutions must pass through committee sessions, where they are reviewed by select council members and are subject to public testimony. Once they move through committee, they advance to the Legislative Session, which is held on Thursdays before the full Council and the Mayor. You can watch these meetings on Channel 2 or on YouTube by clicking this link.

The At Large City Council person is voted on city wide, the in District, City Council person is only voted on by people that live in that District.
